Painter’s Green may be a story be about “unintended consequence” or it
might be about why “you should be careful about what you wish for.”
The short story, Painter’s Green begins in a small town that is dying, a phenomenon common to many rural areas. The lead character, Terry Painter, tells the story in the first person, and talks about his efforts to save the town. Terry is a painter, as were his father and grandfather before him. He hopes to rejuvenate the town, and win the love of his life, by turning the family paint contracting business around.
He finds, or thinks he has found, the way. When he discovers an old can of green paint mixed by his father. The paint has magical properties, which when applied not only paints an object, but causes strange things to happen. It repairs the object, makes it beautiful beyond its original condition and provides it and it’s owner the power to grow to their full potential. You could call it the green and grow paint that replenishes all, including itself when applied.
But growth isn’t always good, as Terry Painter soon learns in this story. It reminded me of some of the short, tongue in cheek, horror stories written by Ray Bradbury.
This is a well- written quick read by an author who shows much potential as long as he can continue to plumb the dark, sardonic reaches of his mind.
